2017 Earth Day Appreciation

The first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970. That was back in the day when groups would rally against the government and protest everything from oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife. Their voice loud and strong, 20 million Americans joined together on a single day.

And people were heard. By the end of 1970 the US government created the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts.

The environmental movement had begun.

Over the past 47 years we have seen and participated in massive changes in environmental protection and awareness. You can read about some of these successes here.

Observation of Earth Day has grown along with the years. Rallies and protests have been replaced with teach-ins. The 2017 Earth Day campaign is called Environmental and Climate Literacy. Environmental literacy begins with a general awareness of the relationship between human life and the environment. It includes knowledge and understanding of natural systems and attitudes of appreciation and concern toward all living things.

For a person or group to be environmentally literate they will incorporate appropriate environmental consideration in every action they take. It is the ability to stand up and successfully act for your planet.

We at Indian Meadow Herbals demonstrate our environmental literacy by the conscious decisions we make about our packaging. We choose packaging that is biodegradable or recyclable.

At Indian Meadow Herbals we also use as many certified organic ingredients as possible in all our products. Choosing certified organic ingredients supports the organic farming industry.

Organic practices mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Organic farming practices also support the health of bees and other pollinators, reduces the causes of climate change, supports biodiversity, improves soil and air quality.

Choosing to purchase and use organic skin care products for yourself and your family has far reaching benefits that you can be proud to support. What a great way for you to demonstrate your environmental literacy!
