Ingredient Rundown: St. John’s Wort
St. John’s Wort is native to North America, Australia and Europe. In fact the name “wort” means “plant” in old English.
It is a woody perennial that smells similar to balsam. If you hold a leaf up to the light you will see it is covered with red dots. These dots are oil glands containing the pigment hypericin, giving a reddish tint to preparations made with St. John’s Wort. The yellow flower is the part of the plant used in herbal preparations.
St. John’s Wort has been used for hundreds of years to help heal burns, bruises, sores and sprains. It is also used to help reduce anxiety and relieve depression.
St. John’s Wort is rich in bioflavanoids and antioxidants that contribute to its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It stimulates the circulation of oxygen rich blood to damaged skin cells. This speeds the healing process.
